Seed-pod rag-rug | 2012
Homecoming | Lawrence, KS

Seed-pod Rag-rug is made from foraged fruits of Liquidambar styraciflua,or the American Sweet-gum tree. The thistly seed pods were collected, sorted, and meticulously thread together by hand to create the familiar form of the rug, which becomes both inviting and repulsive due to its asperous surface. I am interested in the transformative quality of the seed pods as a material for a woven object. The fallen fruits litter streets and lawns and are typically seen as a nuisance or not seen at all. In collecting and repurposing the seed pods I make them visable and perhaps even beautiful.
